Nick Cage - Sound Suits
My Piece: For this studio project of creating our own "sound suits" or as we all called them, finger puppets, we were instructed to model something we celebrate about ourselves. I chose to show my love for nature by making a tree-like figure out of pipe cleaners and added some feathers on top. I also chose to include some foam stickers of bugs and flowers to add to the nature vibe that I was trying to give off with my sound suit. On the back of my tree creation, I added some shiny sequins to show the spark that I have in my personality.
Classroom Application: This activity could be fun for students of any grade-level. Some aspects of it such as hot glueing and shaping the modeling clay around their finger may be hard for younger students such as Kindergarten and first grade. For older grades, however, this would be a unique way to share a little bit about who they are.
Materials Needed: Fast drying modeling clay in a variety of colors, hot clue, pipe cleaners, buttons, sequins, feathers, stickers, beads, (any crafty materials really)

Norman Rockwell - Magazine Cover

My Piece: For the studio project of creating a magazine cover, we were instructed to digitally create a visual that went along with one of the themes that Norman Rockwell tended to portray in his paintings. I chose the past as my theme. Over spring break, I travelled to Mexico and visited the ancient Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza and it really opened my eyes to another culture and civilization. I chose the photo of me in front of Chichen Itza as my cover photo and then placed some text all over the cover that I thought could go on a magazine cover. My favorite text is the "Uncover the past" portion because it really goes along well with the theme.
Classroom Application: This activity could be used in the elementary classroom, however, it would probably be most beneficial to upper elementary grades such as fourth or fifth due to the complications that even a college student like me had while creating it. Students could create a magazine cover or a simple poster about a theme of a literature piece that they are reading about in class or it could be used after a break from school and the students can create a visual aid that shows what they did. They can then present these to the class.
Materials Needed: Computer, iPad, Photo
