Rene Magritte - Surrealism
My Piece: For this studio, we were instructed to pick out two backgrounds for our postcards and glue them down. Then, we had to choose 5-10 other pages out of a magazine with rich visuals on them and tear them out. Then, we each passed our postcard to the left of us and the person we passed to had to cut out one of their pictures on the pages they tore out and place it with the post card. We did that three times and then we got our own postcards handed back to us with the three cut out objects with it. We then were instructed to consider what we had learned about imagery and then glue the items onto our backgrounds. On the back of one of the postcards, we had to actually make it a postcard to somebody as if we were on a vacation or adventuring somewhere. On the back of the second postcard, we had to write about the relationships of the images and the meaning that they have.
Classroom Application: This activity could be good to do with any grade level. They could be learning about imagery and the significance that placing certain items in certain places have. For younger grades, using just one piece of computer paper and having them create a scene may be better than having them make small postcards and writing about it.
Materials Needed: Paper (whatever size fits your needs), magazines, glue, scissors, pencils, colored pencils
